Where to taste olio nuovo
Sometimes we?re so distracted by all the world-class vino, we plain forget that wine country is also the source of another hot commodity: olive oil.
And not just any olive oil--olio nuovo (that?s Italian for ?new oil,? i.e., olive oil that?s fresh off the presses). This time of year is harvest season, so the varieties are greener, grassier and more intensely flavorful. We rounded up a few places to get your fill:
McEvoy Ranch The 550-acre property in Petaluma is rarely open to the public, so be sure to attend the free open house on December 8, where you can taste the olio nuovo known for its silky texture and peppery finish. 5935 Red Hill Rd.
DaVero If Mario Batali approves of DaVero?s olive oil, so do we. The Healdsburg farm is famous for producing a bold olio nuovo with a tinge of artichoke. Stop by their Day After Thanksgiving party to sample it solo or drizzled on top of the Rosso pizzas that will be made and sold on site. 766 Westside Rd.
Round Pond Estate The family-run Napa establishment is hosting its first annual olio nuovo festival this year. Attend the feast on December 8 ($100), featuring freshly picked produce from their biodynamic gardens, or stop in anytime for a tour and tasting ($45). 886 Rutherford Rd.
