The Wheel Thing
Ride like a pro at the new SoulCycle
You?ve pedaled through the Marin Headlands and gritted your teeth through cycling classes at the gym. But you?ve probably never experienced the stationary-biking phenomenon that is SoulCycle.
The cult-turned-celeb-studded exercise craze that started in 2006 in New York City is coming to Larkspur, landing at a new studio in Marin County Mart this Saturday. Lucky for you, we?ve got the lowdown on how to master this admittedly intimidating class:
First off, it?s important to know that SoulCycle reinvented the oft-stultifying indoor-cycling wheel, turning cycling into a full-body workout by combining calorie-torching cardio with moves that tone your arms and core. During the 45-minute class, you?ll be led through a series of exercises as you pedal, including biceps curls with one- to five-pound weights (your choice) and seated crunches that target your obliques.
A few tips for newbies: If you don?t already own clip-in kicks, you can rent them at the front desk for $3. Grab a seat cover in the studio for a cushier ride. And don?t be afraid to ask for assistance adjusting your bike--SoulCycle instructors pride themselves on coaching you through the motions.
Finally, expect to leave a puddle of sweat beneath your bike. The classes are conveniently candlelit, so no one will notice.
First class with shoe rental is $20; subsequent classes are $30; reserve your spot online. 1601 Larkspur Landing Circle; 415-285-7685 or soul-cycle.com/soul-west/soul-marin.cfm
