The eco-friendly folks at Cedar House Sport Hotel lined three of its rooftops with gardens filled with seasonal native plants.
Grab some drinks and snacks from the hotel's acclaimed restaurant, Stella, at the indoor/outdoor lobby bar--then bring your provisions onto the patio.
For the final installment of our summer-escape series, we?re planning your trip to Tahoe. So pack your new suit and get ready to play on the lake.
Where to stay: Use the Cedar House Sport Hotel as your jumping-off point--literally. The pup-friendly contemporary lodging outside of downtown Truckee (starting at $170 a night) has an in-house touring company so you can seamlessly make your arrangements to hike, kayak and mountain bike nearby. If you want to laze around the lake, shack up in one of the six waterfront rooms at the West Shore Café and Inn (starting at $279 a night).
Where to eat and drink: For breakfast, order the killer huevos rancheros at Firesign Cafe in Tahoe City. Grab some crab and lobster cakes with smoked tomato sauce for lunch on the deck at Sunnyside. Then catch the sunset and nurse a Lakeside Lemonade on the floating dock at Pier 111 Bar before heading to Gar Woods for a seafood dinner extravaganza (scallops with Dungeness crab risotto, anyone?).
Where to chill out: Be sure to wear your swimsuit when hiking Squaw Valley?s High Camp along the Shirley Lake Trail--you?ll find a pool and hot tub at the summit. Or skip the crowds and go to the serene Secret Cove beaches, where clothing is optional.
