The Phoenix Hotel lights up for ArtPadSF.

As much as we appreciate museum exhibits and gallery shows, sometimes the art scene can still be intimidating--and a little stiff, if we?re honest.

Two contemporary-art fairs descending on the city today--ArtMrkt and ArtPadSF--aim to change that. Here, a few events you won?t want to miss:

Thursday: As part of ArtPadSF?s opening night, Bay Area artist Andrew Benson will be projecting massive diamond-like images onto the walls of the Phoenix Hotel. As an attendee, your silhouette might even be integrated into the digital mural. ($50 for general admission)

Friday: After you walk through the mouth of Laurina Paperina?s giant pink bear at the entrance to ArtMrkt?s new home base in Fort Mason Center, keep your eyes peeled for a rare Man Ray painting at Forum Gallery. ($20 for a one-day ticket; $35 for multi-day)

Saturday: At 5 p.m. in the courtyard of the Phoenix, the avant-garde dancing duo Navarette x Kajiyama will perform an excerpt from their thought-provoking piece BAILOUT!--an exploration of how people coped with the 2011 natural disasters in Japan. (Free)

Sunday: Curious about collecting? Listen in as acclaimed local interior designers Gary Hutton and Michael Booth talk about curating artwork at this ArtMrkt discussion. ($20 for a one-day ticket
