Old Jewels, New Tricks
Sweet & Spark revives old baubles
As a young girl growing up in Buffalo, N.Y., Jillian Bremer tagged along with her antique collector dad, Howard, as he perused estate sales. When she was in college, he?d send small boxes of vintage jewelry for her to sift through.
Flash forward to 2013 and the father-daughter duo are newly minted business partners, having recently launched a vintage-jewelry e-boutique called Sweet & Spark. Howard manages the buying side from the East Coast, while Jillian runs the site out of San Francisco.
But enough with the backstory--let?s talk about the baubles! Sweet & Spark features earrings, necklaces, bracelets and brooches from all-American designers such as Anne Klein and Monet. Spanning the 1940s through the 1990s, the vintage jewels range from this flashy ?60s rhinestone bracelet ($34) to these delicate ?80s pink stone drop earrings ($34).
Jillian has also curated several collections that reflect current trends. For example, Add Edge showcases items with bold, geometric shapes. Our favorite is the Bayside medley, which manages to make colorful enamel jewelry feel fresh and modern.
Not sure how to style a certain piece? Jillian will send you advice, replete with useful pictures. She actually models many of the items on the site herself.
Grandma?s jewelry box just got some serious competition.
