With all the culinary innovation in this city, sandwiches aren’t exactly on the top of our must-eat list.
That all changed after we visited Mission Picnic, a teeny new deli on 22nd Street that serves up anything-but-ordinary sandwiches.
Run by three Bay Area natives who grew up together, Mission Picnic puts a worldly, modern twist on classics. Drawing on their diverse heritage, the owners infuse sandwiches such as the Hainan Chicken with global flavors like ginger sauce and scallion oil.
There are also good ol’ American options with a NorCal bent, like the Roast Beet--turkey, Swiss, oven-roasted beets, garlic spread and mayo layered on a Dutch crunch roll. But our favorite has to be the “dessert sandwich” aptly named The King: peanut butter, banana, chocolate, honey and Frosted Flakes on toasted brioche.
Mission Picnic already has a following, so get there around opening time at 11 a.m. to avoid the rush. Coming soon: picnic baskets you can order in advance and bring over to Dolores Park to indulge outdoors.
