Sustainable fabrics--ahem, hemp--do not easily translate into sleek, luxurious clothing. But the designs from Mina+Olya have made us completely reconsider what environmentally friendly fashion looks and feels like.
The two innovative designers behind the brand, Mina Yazdi and Olya Dzilikhova, take the highest-quality organic wool, silk, cotton and denim and transform the fabrics into vibrant, modern separates with an international sensibility influenced by their Iranian and Russian heritage. They launched Mina+Olya in 2011 and just debuted their first spring collection.
Inspired by the waist-conscious silhouettes of the late ?70s and ?80s, the collection is brimming with structured pieces that complement your shape without clinging. Organic denim and a hemp-silk blend (the two materials that dominate the line) update the looks, and saturated colors like the chartreuse in this Kelly dress ($695) unapologetically pop.
We immediately gravitated toward the bright lilac Lily dress ($625) and the way it meshes subtle sex appeal with major sophistication. The plum Laura pencil skirt ($550), with inverted pleats and hidden pockets, is the instant star in any ensemble.
Yazdi and Dzilikhova told us they make clothes they would want to wear. We second that sentiment.
Mina+Olya is available to order through their website and at Curve, 2360 Fillmore St. Trunk shows and an e-commerce site are slated for July.
