The best trail runs in and around town
Why hello there, nature.

With such beautiful surroundings, why confine yourself to the gym? Ditch the treadmill and trendy workouts and take a healthy jog in the fresh air. To get started, check out these three trail runs in and around town:

Short and steep (0.56 miles) Imagine a magical forest of eucalyptus and ferns that offers glimpses of the Golden Gate Bridge and Sutro Tower. That’s Mount Sutro Open Space Reserve. Access the Edgewood trail from the top of Edgewood Avenue in Cole Valley. After a short uphill climb, veer east onto the Historic trail and come down the Stanyan Street steps. You’ll feel it in your glutes. peasepress.com/sutromap

Slow and steady (4-mile loop) Cross the bridge into Marin for a quintessential Pacific Coast run. Start at Rodeo Beach in the Headlands of Sausalito and wind your way over the breezy slopes above Rodeo Lagoon, Tennessee Valley and the ocean. pctrailruns.com

Stair master (1.5-mile loop) Start at the north entrance of the Presidio’s California Coastal Trail. Run south until you link up with the steep “sand ladder” on the Batteries to Bluffs path. For a short, butt-kicking detour, take the spur trail to Marshall’s Beach, a secluded area surrounded by rocky serpentine cliffs. presidio.gov
