Sure, Coachella, SXSW and Outside Lands are all barometers of what’s next on the music scene. But we’re going to give you the heads-up on a still-under-the-radar newcomer we predict will soon be a local star.
Her name is Maryam Qudus (a.k.a. Doe Eye).
The San Francisco singer-songwriter’s sultry vocals and dreamy keyboards make for wistful tunes that sound a touch like Goldfrapp with St. Vincent and Lucius mixed in. We’ve got the power ballad “Diamond” on repeat.
The 23-year-old also has an interesting story to tell. The daughter of Afghan expats, she grew up with little exposure to Western music, and her record was funded entirely by a Kickstarter campaign.
Want to check her out in person? Nab tickets for her spot at Monterey’s First City Festival (tickets here) on August 23, where she’ll share the stage with big shots like Beck, Phantogram and Best Coast.
You can thank us when your friends say you’ve discovered the new “it” girl.
