A not-so-sleepy Sausalito day trip
Looking for a good reason to cross the bridge? Here’s one: California Caviar Company recently opened a tasting room in Sausalito, where you can sample flights of the delicacy. And it’s your duty to indulge.
Stop by anytime between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. Monday through Friday (just call and give them a heads up to save a spot), or book an appointment for an evening or weekend.
To make a whole day of it, start with a lunch of classic red-snapper ceviche ($12), fried pork-belly tacos (two for $11) and a blue-agave margarita ($10) at the Mexican restaurant Copita. Then burn off a few calories with an easy one-mile hike up the Excelsior Lane steps (next to the Wells Fargo on Bridgeway). You’ll get to peep into Craftsman-style homes clinging to cliffs and take in spectacular bay views.
Now you’re ready for caviar. We recommend tasting one-ounce servings of salty salmon roe ($7), smoky truffle whitefish ($12) and oh-so-smooth Jacques Pepin pressed caviar ($45) from the a la carte menu.
Cap off the day with an SF Bay Adventures sunset sail aboard the Freda B ($55). The two-hour tour launches from Sausalito’s downtown docks and whisks you around the San Francisco Bay. Need extra incentive? There are warm blankets and hot chocolate for the ride.
