A resident's ode to trendy Oakland
Make friends with Esqueleto's Lauren Wolf.

Oakland, once called a ?gritty city,? is on everyone?s radar. Heck, even The New York Times and are talking about it.

Never one to miss a beat, longtime Oakland resident Melissa Davis hatched the idea for a photo-driven guide to the city she adores.

For This Is Oakland, she partnered with photographer and Bay Area native Kristen Loken to create stunning portraits of 90 local joints--from the hot-pink Indian street-food restaurant Juhu Beach Club to the Art Deco-era Paramount Theatre.

But the book offers more than just pretty pictures. Davis gives us an inside look at the craftsmen and small business owners who make Oakland such a vibrant community. (Did you know that Esqueleto?s Lauren Wolf uses anaconda bones in her jewelry?)

To celebrate the book?s launch, Davis is throwing a block party on June 21 (in Oakland, duh). There, you can nab goods from local boutiques like Neighbor, treats from Doughnut Dolly and cold brews courtesy of The Trappist.

Dare we say it?s the new Brooklyn?

The June 21 launch party will be held from noon to 4 p.m. on 9th Street between Broadway and Washington; RSVP here. Order the book at
