When we’re looking for a quick breakfast, we often improvise and make a smoothie from the frozen fruit stashed in our freezer. But when we want to put more thought (even if it’s just an extra 90 seconds) into our morning routine, we turn to experts like author and raw-foods chef Matthew Kenney. At Kenney’s new Santa Monica juice bar and snack shop, M.A.K.E. OUT, smoothies like this vibrant blueberry number promise bright flavors and a sweet pick-me-up in one portable package.

Makes 1 smoothie (about 1 cups)

1 frozen banana

1 cup frozen blueberries

¼ cup ice

1 teaspoon hemp seeds

1 teaspoon bee pollen (optional)

Sea salt

¾ cup almond milk

1½ teaspoons honey, preferably raw honey

1. In a blender, combine the banana with the blueberries, ice, hemp seeds, bee pollen (if using) and a pinch of salt.

2. Pour the almond milk and honey into the blender and blend until smooth, about 30 seconds.

3. Transfer the smoothie to a tall glass and serve immediately.
