Where to sing along with a real band
Equal parts terrifying and exhilarating, live karaoke is one of those things everyone should do once (and will never forget, if Instagram has anything to do with it).
Here’s where to belt the B-52’s in front of an actual band.
On Mondays A New York institution, Arlene’s Grocery has put a mic in the hands of everyone from John Varvatos to Jim Carrey. Preview the songs in advance to plan your “R-E-S-P-E-C-T” moment. 10 p.m.; 95 Stanton St. (at Orchard St.)
On Wednesdays The Jazz Room at the General ain’t always as sweet as it sounds. You start out nibbling on Chinese chicken tacos and before you know it, your marketing-department dinner has turned into an early-Whitney dance-off. Get ready: May 14th is BEYONCE-THEMED. 10 p.m.; 199 Bowery (at Spring St.)
On Thursdays As you’ve probably noticed, these shindigs don’t quite kick off until late. If you live above 59th Street, O’Flanagan’s Bar on the Upper East Side might be a more reasonable option for getting your Sister Sledge on. 9 p.m.; 1215 First Ave. (at 65th St.)
