Bold accessories from a Manhattan legend
Manhattan socialite and fashionista Iris Apfel has worn many prestigious hats: interior designer, textile company owner, White House decorator (under nine presidents)--even the subject of a Metropolitan Museum retrospective. Still, this 90-year-old, known for her giant eyeglasses and red lipstick, shows no sign of stopping.
Her newest endeavor is a collaboration with online fashion retailer yoox.com that includes two original jewelry lines and a series of vintage offerings from her own stockpile.
The first collection, "Ready to Wear," features organic, graphic pieces like chunky amber bracelets ($150) and beaded buffalo-horn necklaces ($325). We particularly love these sweet ivory earrings ($75).
The "Limited Edition" line is significantly flashier and more offbeat. This oversized resin necklace ($2,600), for instance, would look fabulous with Apfel's patented specs, while these crystal Buddha earrings ($2,080) make a statement all on their own.
But as much as we love the original creations, we're lusting most for the one-of-a-kind pieces plucked straight from Apfel's prolific personal collection. Just imagine wearing this Nina Ricci gold globe bangle ($1,200) to Jean Georges or arriving at the Met with this snake charmer brooch ($1,200) on your lapel.
It would be hard not to feel like New York royalty.
