The High Holidays may be over, but that doesn't mean your rugelach consumption needs to end--certainly not with Zucker Bakery hot on the confection scene.

The new East Village sweetshop comes courtesy of former Daniel line cook Zohar Zohar, though don't expect to find any French or fine-dining influences at her casual outpost. Most of the creations are family recipes from Zohar's native Israel, and all have a cozy, home-baked appeal.

That said, everything goes beyond our home-baking capabilities. The exquisite breakfast "roses" ($2), for instance, are made with a halvah-date spread and a texturized foam top, resulting in a pastry somewhere between a sticky bun and a hamantasch. Likewise, the dulce-de-leche alfajores ($1)--a recipe Zohar obtained from an Argentinean family member--are the best bite-size treat we never knew existed.

But our favorite indulgence might be the chocolate "snowballs" ($1)--crushed chocolate cookies rolled in shredded coconut--which are light and subtle, despite their truffle-like appearance.

Though Zucker is open until 5 p.m. every day but Monday, we suggest stopping by early in the morning, when the goods are freshest and you can linger in an old-fashioned window seat over a sweet and a cup of Stumptown coffee.
