The new Rockaways go-to
If you haven?t heard, summer is rapidly winding down. (Cue tears.) However, there is a solution to stretch your lazy weekends for as long as possible. It involves fresh-caught seafood, lawn chairs, ping-pong and the occasional dance party--all without braving the Montauk Highway.
Get yourself to Playland Motel.
The largely locals-run Rockaways? joint is part art-scene hotel (think: the Ace Hotel goes surfing) and part retro-style watering hole. But before you judge a book by its aggressively hipster website, hear us out: It?s pretty hard to beat a watermelon salad and a glass of sangria after a day at the beach.
Our advice is to test the lounging waters before trying to score a room reservation. Get a table either in the indoor restaurant or on the backyard patio, and dig into wood-fired pizzas, handmade empanadas, hearty sandwiches or just some standard raw-bar goodness. (We never want to know a world without oysters.)
Don?t get us wrong, the hotel rooms are so cool, but the 12 quarters are all booked through Labor Day. The good news is that Playland Motel will be open through the fall (the restaurant, year-round), so $200 for a spontaneous fresh-air getaway in October? We?ll see you on the A Train.
