Mmm...crêpes. Not much can improve upon a pancake oozing Nutella, right? What if we told you you could swap the chocolate and butter for shrimp and avocado?
Introducing Eight Turn Crêpe, a Nolita food stand that puts a Japanese spin on the beloved treat. Rather than coma-inducing French fried dough and cream, this incarnation is lighter, less sugary and actually gluten-free, thanks to the magic of rice flour.
But here’s where the Japanese angle really comes in: The crêpes are stuffed with hearty ingredients (similar to a sandwich) and wrapped like a cone--a format made popular in Harajuku, so shoppers there could eat quickly and get back to browsing.
Stop by for a hearty breakfast (involving the likes of egg whites, truffle mushrooms, spinach and cheddar cheese) or an on-the-go lunch. (The chicken Thai salad we tried was perfectly filling.) But for the purists in the bunch, there is, of course, a range of fruity crêpes, too--from classic berry parfaits to matcha-and-azuki-bean situations.
Though, regardless of your stance on savory verses sweet, let it be known that the black-sesame gelato milkshake will change your life, no matter the time of day.
