She launched J.Crew’s jewelry line. She dreamed up Tory Burch’s baubles. And now she’s struck out on her own.
Meet Lele Sadoughi. Since she’s been around some of the brightest in the biz, we couldn’t resist asking her to share a few nuggets of working wisdom.
What she learned from Mickey Drexler Use people (in the best way possible). Sadoughi, who served as J.Crew’s jewelry design director for five years, said the CEO’s secret weapon is to personally interview every employee. No matter the level or department, there’s always something new to discover from those around you.
What she learned from Tory Burch Be realistic with your time. It was Burch who encouraged Sadoughi to work in the office only three days a week so she could focus on launching her own line. Major projects are more manageable when you have a solid handle on your schedule.
What she learned from big business Experience is everything. If you’ve got the self-employment itch, give yourself a good education first (i.e., cut your teeth on someone else’s dime). Take advantage of the security, hone your skills, experiment with new ideas and follow in the footsteps of the big dogs.
What we learned from Lele Sadoughi Hard work pays off. Just take it from the bangles.
