Geography lesson: The Finger Lakes region is comprised of a dozen narrow, vertical lakes just west of Syracuse, north of Ithaca and south of Lake Ontario. It takes about five hours to drive there from the city, but if you don't happen to own a car, we suggest hopping on Amtrak's Empire service to Syracuse and renting a car there. You'll want mobility around these parts.
The Inns of Aurora, also a national landmark, is another quaint option. The three properties have been recently renovated but kept the style of its 200-year-old past. Room start at $275 a night for July and August.
391 Main St., Aurora
Even if you don't stay at the Inns, at least make a reservation for a sunset dinner at the Aurora Inn's lakeside dining room.
Now to the relaxing. Mirbeau Inn & Spa may not be directly on a lake like the others, but it does have one of the area's best spas--regardless of whether you bunk at the resort or just drop by for a treatment. Rooms start at $285 for the season, and massages start at $120.
851 W. Genesee St., Skaneateles
Saturday wine tastings along Long Island are a delight, obviously. But did you know that New York’s Finger Lakes region is actually one of the largest wine producers in the country? What if we told you it also had a renowned cheese trail?
How to get there Amtrak, major bus lines and small airports serve the area, but mobility is key around these parts. It is about a five-hour drive from the city, so even if you take the train north and pick up a joyride rental there, it’s worth it.
Where to stay The distances between the lakes, vineyards and farms are pretty manageable, so choose the lodging that best suits your style. There’s everything from a secluded 34-room inn and spa to an actual castle and options in between.
What to do Did we mention wine and cheese? There are also plenty of waterfall hiking paths and good old scenic views to clear your head. Regardless of the weekend, it’s always a good time, but allow us to direct you to one date in particular: July 27, when a little thing known as the annual Finger Lakes Cheese Festival occurs.
