Fall courses to kick your summer slump
If your brain--like ours--turns to mush each August, we suggest a fall class to get the old gears moving once again. Here, the city's newest reasons to go back to school this autumn.
92Y Glee Does the idea of performing choreographed song-and-dance numbers fill you with glee? The 92nd Street Y's adult glee club ($220 for 11 sessions) will have you harmonizing like a teenager--or at least a 30-year-old who plays a teenager. Begins September 26.
Cityscape Photography The International Center of Photography offers many terrific classes for "developing" shutterbugs, but our pick is the field-trip-friendly "Photographing New York" ($640 for ten sessions) that teaches the art of finding and shooting off-the-beaten-track locales. Begins October 5.
Bouley Test Kitchen You've been to Bouley and Brushstroke. Now learn to cook like your favorite chef with a seminar at the Bouley Test Kitchen. While the September 28 "Fall Harvest" lesson ($175) is great for budding locavores, we're most excited about the Thanksgiving crash course ($175) on November 9.
Color Theory Though a tad remote, Bushwick's 3rd Ward is truly an artistic epicenter (think shoemaking and comedy-screenwriting workshops). This three-session color-theory course ($150), which delves into color history and collaging, sounds fascinating. Begins September 15.
