Oh hello, outdoor shower. (It has an oceanfront window by the way.) We're positively salivating over this Water Island abode.
Only two hours from the city, it's incredible how far away Fire Island feels. Get the full experience with a hike through the Sunken Forest.
Even the ferry ride over is a delight. Just make sure you know the dos and don'ts of what to bring. Dogs are cool; bikes are not (but available on the island).
So, it snowed this week--in March. If ever there were a time to finally plan that upcoming getaway, it is now. We’re wrapping up our summer-vacation-planning series with the most peaceful place of them all: Fire Island.
Where to stay For a truly secluded retreat, consider the smaller hamlets, like Water Island. The farthest stop off the Sayville ferry, it’s comprised of only 50 properties, including this ridiculous four-bedroom home (and its 360-degree water views). But if you’d rather be closer to markets and activities (like a movie theater), Ocean Beach is a more bustling, yet still quaint, village right off the Bayshore ferry. Here you can find a mix of rental options--from a spacious new oceanfront home to a cozy bungalow along the path to the beach.
What to get excited about Doing nothing. Since no cars are allowed on the island and deer roam free, it’s an ideal respite from the city. Skimp on the outfit options (a sundress and flip-flops are about all you need) and instead stock your bags with wine, snacks and books. Many of the communities have restaurants and bars (again, Ocean Beach has the most) and a range of outdoor activities (we recommend a hike through the Sunken Forest). But in reality, chilling out is absolutely the highlight. Get your rolling cooler ready.
