How to have fun with your eyewear
There are two things we?d like to clear up: First, you should never consider your glasses to be a crappy-day alternative to contacts. Second, you can incorporate more than one pair into your wardrobe. It?s just like any other accessory--have some fun.
Here, a few unconventional ways to upgrade your eyewear.
The cheapest route You don?t have to fork over a month?s rent at your optometrist?s. Browse vintage boutiques--like the incredible and affordable Fabulous Fanny?s (335 E. Ninth St.), which is known for its endless drawers of cat-eyes and oversize plastic frames. Or grab some funky readers (say, from local fashion icon Iris Apfel?s new collection, $99 to $125). Then take them to the city?s best-kept secret, Optical 88 (116 Mott St.). Depending on your prescription strength, they can put in lenses for as little as $50 and usually within an hour.
The coolest route If price isn?t as much of a factor but quality is, Silver Lining Opticians (92 Thompson St.) has the most jaw-dropping lineup of vintage Balenciaga, Dior and more. Did you see how awesome Jay-Z looked at the inauguration? Those transition Persols came from here.
You can thank us for all the compliments later.
