If you?re like us, curling up with hot tea and a good book sounds like the perfect afternoon. Such homey pastimes are coincidentally also the inspiration behind Starling Brood, a new line of comforting wares handmade in Brooklyn.
Industrial designer and sculptor Mihaeko (she?s a one-namer, à la Cher) dreamed up the collection--ceramic teacups ($20 to $48), embroidered pillows ($44), quirky decor ($15 to $75), knitted cowl scarves ($52) and antique books ($20 to $40)--while touring the world with Björk (yes, really). She cocreated larger-than-life musical instruments for the Icelandic singer?s stage show Biophilia but realized along the way that her true calling was far more intimate and soothing.
While the current collection may be limited (certain items have already sold out), Mihaeko is hard at work handcrafting more inventory and adding new product lines--think bird, insect and seedpod designs.
Stealing yourself away from the couch may be another story?
