SCHOONER OR LATER
Beat the summer heat on a chartered sailboat
Blistering temperatures have us craving an off-land escape. Thankfully, these private sailing companies know how to make the steamy city feel a million miles away:
Perfect for a sunset cruise for two or an afternoon picnic with friends, Atlantic Sail & Charter takes guests around the New York Harbor on a bona fide national landmark. We love the once-a-month, Sunday-brunch cruise ($45 a person), a welcome respite from packed restaurants. You bring the bagels and the crew takes care of the rest.
Under his private charter company, Tivoli, lifelong sailor Jerome Crandall Hollick takes guests on intimate tours of the Hudson River while serving up a lunch of local treats (trips start at $25 a person). History buffs will adore the mansion tour, a four-hour sail around the middle of the Hudson that stops at breathtaking estates like Montgomery Place.
There's nothing like Block Island Sound at dusk, and Sailing Montauk's Sunset Cruise ($59 a person) is a spectacular way to end a day in the Hamptons (hop aboard before September and you might even see a whale). For the adventure-minded, the Sail + Sport excursions anchor at remote spots where you can kayak, water ski and snorkel away from the crowds.
