A master pastry chef elevates the ice-cream sandwich
There's much to adore about François Payard's cozy SoHo bakery: the flaky pain au chocolat, the béchamel-laden croque monsieurs and seasonal fruit tarts that are (almost) too gorgeous to eat.
Now the renowned chef is helping us keep our cool while we get our sugar fix. His new macaron ice cream sandwiches come in four flavors that will make you feel like a kid again--that is, one with a very refined palate.
Our favorite sandwich is the nutty pistachio macaron with raspberry ice cream (it tastes just like a rainbow cookie), but we couldn't resist seconds of all four versions. The coconut macaron with mango sorbet reminds us of piña coladas on the beach, and we love Payard's take on cheesecake ice cream, which pairs Philadelphia Cream Cheese with a crisp, berry-flavored macaron. He's even whipped up a brownie sandwich (his first ever) filled with vanilla ice cream for those who are more Good Humor than glacé.
In addition to the bakery, the sandwiches are also sold at Payard's Chocolate Bar at the Plaza Hotel. And at $5 apiece, they're one of the sweetest deals in town.
