Macaron Parlour's "S'mores" with a brown-sugar and honey shell, and dark-chocolate and marshmallow filling. ($2.50 each)
If you’re a regular on the foodie-fair scene, you may already be savvy to the glory that is the savory macaron. If not, you can now try the much abuzz treat at its new brick-and-mortar home, Macaron Parlour.
In a charming St. Mark’s storefront café near Tompkins Square Park, classically trained bakers (and husband and wife) Simon Tung and Christina Ha concoct their nontraditional bites--like brown-sugar s’mores, Earl Grey tea and chocolate ganache, cognac-spiked tiramisu, candied bacon with maple cream cheese and the recently launched peanut butter and banana, aptly dubbed “The Elvis” ($2.50 each).
Because our patience and our sweet tooth aren’t mutually exclusive, we preempted the shop opening and stopped by Mad. Sq. Eats (which runs through next week) to sample a few of the flavors. And they’re fantastic. Equal parts salty and sweet, the American twist on the French delicacy totally works. But should you be a purist, they also serve up classic flavors like pistachio, strawberry and lemon.
