As necessary as a last-minute $60 massage often is, we sometimes find ourselves longing for more than the typical communal locker rooms and no-frills approach of many city spas. But a new splurge-worthy spot has opened--well, returned. Welcome back, Cornelia Spa.

Following a three-year hiatus, the grandiose day resort that once commanded a prime corner on Fifth Avenue recently landed a much more subtle location: the impeccable boutique hotel The Surrey, on the Upper East Side. The treatments are similar to before (caviar facials and Champagne-and-sugar body scrubs), but like the setting, the services have been refined as well. You won’t see the infamous $500 four-hand facial of yesteryear; instead, you’ll pay the likes of $175 for an hour-long reflexology massage or $345 for a two-hour body scrub and detoxifying wrap.

The draw here is all in the experience. With only five private treatment rooms (each including a personal restroom, shower and armoire), you can actually unplug and unwind in true seclusion. While there, we also highly recommend taking advantage of the complimentary access to the hotel’s gorgeous rooftop terrace and bar, which is available only to select neighborhood patrons and hotel and spa guests.
