Australian company Chunky Move is ripe for becoming the hot new thing in the modern dance world. When we caught them at last year's BAM Next Wave Festival--for a piece that had performers dancing in sync with digital images and lasers--we knew this was a troupe to keep an eye on.

Needless to say, we can't wait to check out Chunky Move's latest creation, I Like This, which marks its US premiere with a three-day stint (April 6 to 9) at the intimate, 74-seat Joyce SoHo stage.

Company dancers Byron Perry and Antony Hamilton conceived of, and star in, the work, which makes sense as it's essentially a dance performance about dance itself. I Like This features the duo as choreographers, attempting to wrangle an unruly company. Sometimes they stop and start. Sometimes they get frustrated with their creation. But there's always a sense of fun and improvisation that will have you forgetting the whole thing is staged.

Expect stunning movement, tireless energy, visual surprises (each dancer carries a handheld lantern, for instance, which serves as the show's only source of light) and an often very funny look inside the creative process.

I Like This ($18), April 6 to 9 (Wednesday to Friday at 8 p.m; Saturday at 3 and 8 p.m.)
