New York may be the city that never sleeps, but we recently got a good dose of shut-eye in a surprising place.
Coco-Mat, a new bespoke bedding store in Soho, stocks mattresses, linens and pillows fit for a luxuriously deep sleep. Composed entirely of natural materials like seaweed, horsehair and coconut fibers, the mattresses (ranging from $1,400 to $27,000) are handmade to your specifications and blissfully free of stubborn metal springs.
Choosing the most comfortable bed required some testing: We found the Afroditi mattress good for lighter builds, and the Manolia top mattress--with inner rubber springs that align with the spine--eased our lower-back pain. The best-selling 4-layer bed, a combination of a bed mattress, foam-rubber top mattress and luxurious goose down, would surely have us sleeping soundly as well.
After bed hopping, we went downstairs for a real test-drive: Upon entering the “napping suite,” we were greeted with a robe, slippers and fresh orange juice, then promptly caught up on our beauty sleep on a natural California king bed surrounded by scented candles.
If it weren’t for the three-hour time limit, we easily could have slept the day away.
