We know it's no LOL-ing matter, but do you ever worry about walking into a parked car (or a tree or mailbox) when you're hustling down West Broadway while operating your smartphone? The obvious answer is, of course, to put down your stupid phone and watch where you're going--but we all know that isn't going to happen anytime soon.
Luckily, two new apps have made it easier than ever to keep your eyes on both your screen and the city at large.
Transparent Screen for Android ($2) and Type 'n' Walk for iPhone ($1) both utilize your phone's camera to turn your touch screen into a see-through window over which you can type as you normally would. Just launch the app, hold up your phone (unless you want to stare at the sidewalk) and behold as you can see both your text messages and the world in front of you.
The Android version is the more sophisticated of the two, allowing you to control transparency level, adjust resolution and use any of your apps on top of it. Type 'n' Walk, on the other hand, doesn't have quite as robust a look and works only with text-based tasks like sending emails, SMS messages and tweets.
Either way, you'll be sure to see the oncoming bus before it runs you over.
