Ferment to Be
A new wine bar with an educational bent
Even the most loyal cocktail or beer drinkers will find themselves ordering another glass of vino at Corkbuzz Wine Studio, Laura Maniec's new Union Square wine bar and education center.
The former wine director at BR Guest and the world's youngest master sommelier, Maniec brings her expertise to this intimate, living-room-like lounge, offering up some 35 varieties by the glass ($10 to $52) and more than 200 by the bottle ($40 to $2,495), including sparkling Austrian rosés, fruity Grecian reds and difficult-to-pronounce German Rieslings.
Though the ever-changing menu is education enough, those particularly thirsty for knowledge can register for a onetime, two-hour class in the new year. Courses--which are taught by Maniec or an instructor she's hand-vetted--vary by level (recreational to advanced) and range from Blind Tasting ($75) to Pairing with Sauces and Spices ($75), which helps you break out of your white meat/white wine slump.
Following your tutorial, stick around for a meal cooked by Daniel Boulud-trained executive chef Hayan Yi. Dishes include shrimp with spicy squash butter and kale ($17) and potato hash with duck cracklings ($6).
