Is Ellis Island haunted?
Wandering through the grounds? dilapidated, abandoned hospital (which has never been open to the public until now) will most definitely have you seeing ghosts.
Unframed - Ellis Island, a new guided-tour series, takes small groups of visitors (10 at a time, for 90 minutes) through the unrestored compound that once treated diseased immigrants as they attempted to enter America at the turn of the 20th century.
But it?s not just decaying walls and creepy autopsy rooms you?ll see. There?s also some pretty powerful art woven in as well.
The nonprofit group Save Ellis Island brought in French street artist JR to contribute his infamous technique of plastering portrait photography on building architecture. Though, this is not like his large-scale Women Are Heroes project, which brought attention to domestic violence in global slums. Instead, here he?s taken archival photos of immigrants and staff workers and placed them subtly within the building?s interior (on broken windows, against walls, atop furniture) to give a lifelike yet ultimately eerie feel.
