Decrepit, decades-old cabinets were on last legs, their shelves propped up by food cans.
White, Shaker-style cabinets brighten the space and, well, actually work.
An all-blue bathroom was showing its age and feeling majorly cramped.
Smaller appliances and a white color scheme make the room seem much larger.
Garish orange walls and parquet floors hearkened back to trying design times.
Tearing the wall down altogether creates a more open, up-to-date cooking and eating space.
Though sparse, this big, open room has lots of potential...
Potential that's realized with the help of some high-gloss lacquer and continuous, dark wood floors.
Congrats! You just bought an apartment!
Even if the place is in great condition, odds are not everything is exactly as you’d like. (Who in God’s name picked out that mauve bathroom tile?)
Time to meet Sweeten.
It's a new site that helps homeowners find the best contractors for their renovation needs. But this is no glorified Yellow Pages. Sweeten uses an algorithm similar to that of dating sites to match you with candidates who will bid for your affection (er, project).
Here’s how it goes: Enter your project details (rooms, budget, brief description) online. The system will recommend three NYC contractors who are experts in those particular areas. (Professionals in the network have all been thoroughly vetted, so there are no shady Craigslist situations here.)
You’ll then be able to view past portfolios and client reviews and even schedule site visits for pricing bids. From there, you award one contractor the project (or request another round of candidates) and get to work.
The fine print: Projects must start at $15,000 to use the network. But the good news: The service is entirely free to you and includes regular quality-control check-ins from Sweeten.
Happy tile picking.
