A new app makes your phone a history portal
Living in New York means being surrounded by history. But unless you're one to sign up for boat tours or walk around with a guidebook in hand, you may not know about all the cool things that once occurred in your own city.
Once you download the app, simply input an address or let it track your coordinates. You'll then see a list of happenings, organized by proximity. We checked in from Prince and Houston streets, for example, and learned we were within a one-block radius of James Fenimore Cooper's former home, the bar where Lady Gaga got her start and the site of one the mafia's most bizarre murders.
The New York version is packed with fascinating trivia, ranging from the story behind the Ghostbusters building (55 Central Park West) to the hotel where Dashiell Hammett once went in disguise to avoid paying his bill. (Okay, it's the Pierre.)
You can filter searches by categories like "celebrities" or "crime and scandal," or just walk around and see what you discover.
