If you search Google for images of ?woman working,? chances are you?ll get several shots of well-coiffed ladies in hard hats and a few of sexy vixens on iPads. And heaven help you if you plug in ?woman multitasking? or ?feminist.?
It?s true: The world of stock photography, which many media outlets use for images to accompany their stories, is filled with patronizing, disempowering and just plain cheesy pictures of women.
But now Sheryl Sandberg?s foundation, LeanIn.org, and stock-photo powerhouse Getty Images have joined forces to create some 2,500 pictures devoted to ?the powerful depiction of women, girls and the people who support them.?
The new collection features fierce athletes, not-too-princess-y little girls and cool, collected moms who are neither June Cleaver cutouts nor frazzled stress balls. In other words, the subjects of these photos are real people with real agency.
We love the diversity of female characters--a tattooed mom with her cute-as-a-button daughter, a distinguished fashionista with Iris Apfel glasses and a confidant smirk. And we applaud the Getty team for including more gender-positive male subjects as well. Think sensitive dads caring for their kids and helpful assistants listening to their female bosses.
