Buying art online tends to fall into two extremes: mass-produced posters ($) and rare, fine-art auctions ($$$$). For the rest of us, there's Art+Culture Editions, a new e-gallery that sells a wide array of contemporary pieces at non-prohibitive prices.
There, shoppers can buy limited-edition prints and original artwork from big names like Ross Bleckner, David Salle, and Chuck Close, as well as from up-and-coming talents. You can filter searches by medium ? paintings, photography, mixed media, prints ? and price (pieces range from $50 to $5000), but most of our best finds came from just browsing as you would in a non-virtual gallery.
ACE keeps its offerings affordable (check out their great gift ideas for under $150), while ensuring that artists are paid fairly for their work; CEO Chris Vroom also heads a non-profit which provides financial and logistical support to visual artists worldwide.
Although there's plenty on ACE for both the long-time collector and new buyer, we're particularly keen on G/IRL, an exhibition of digital photography by women. It's presented in conjunction with a current Manhattan gallery show, but with many pieces available online (at three different price points), you can feel like you're at the opening without ever leaving your desk.
