It’s no secret that we’re kind of obsessed with lightbulbs. But even if you’re not the type to go bananas for looped filaments, we can pretty much guarantee that you’ll find the new Hue from Philips pretty darn cool.
Essentially a lightbulb that’s controllable via a mobile app ($200 for three bulbs and the accompanying Wi-Fi bridge), Hue employs fancy LED technology (each bulb can last up to 15 years) to instantly become whatever color you want it to be. So you could select a calming yellow one minute, and a sultry red the next.
The setup is easy: Screw the bulb into any fixture, plug the bridge into your wireless router and download the free smartphone or tablet app. Next, start playing lighting designer.
The possibilities for what you can do with this thing are pretty outrageous. Pull a color from a photo and Hue will simulate it. Snap a picture of a lighting look you love and Hue will re-create it. Tell Hue what mood you’re in and it will suggest various lighting settings.
The coolest feature might be the ability to set your Hue to gradually brighten as you wake up, mimicking the effect of the rising sun--a bright idea if we’ve ever heard one.
