A can't-miss summer getaway

We love Newport, Rhode Island for its simple, summer traditions: the Cliff Walk, clam chowder at The Black Pearl and the Awful Awfuls (which are fantastic fantastic) from the Newport Creamery.

Now, there are two new, upscale reasons to visit the City by the Sea:

Forty 1° North This stunning waterfront hotel in the heart of historic Newport has gas fireplaces, full wet bars and iPads with built-in hotel directories in every room (plus vintage volumes of Encyclopedia Britannica, if you want to read the old-fashioned way). The super-friendly staff will tell you where to get the best lobster roll (Brick Alley Pub) and loan you free bikes for touring the coastal roads. Don't miss breakfast at their in-house restaurant, The Grill, for omelets and a crab-cake Benedict that's out of this world. 351 Thames St.; 401-846-8018 or 41north.com

Muse at the Vanderbilt Grace Officially opening this June, renowned chef Jonathan Cartwright's new restaurant, Muse, at the elegant Vanderbilt Grace Hotel, is guaranteed to be the hottest spot in town. You can beat the summer crowds though, since they're serving the full menu every night this month. Expect traditional New England favorites with a twist: pan-seared scallops over roasted apples, lobster bisque topped with paprika-infused olive oil, and pineapple carpaccio with house-made ginger ice cream. 41 Mary St.; 401-846-6200 or vanderbiltgrace.com

Consider our weekend bags packed.
