Clockwise from top left: Bern, Yakkay, Nutcase and Human Tarot Project helmets

In case you missed the memo: Being a cyclist is cool. And whether you do it to up your hipness or just to get around, we recommend that you do it in style--by wearing a helmet as chic as it is sensible.

Bern With all the clunky, futuristic bike helmets out there (nobody needs to think we're Storm Troopers), we've long been fans of Bern's sleek, equestrian-like offerings. We've particularly got our eye on their new matte-purple number ($70).

Yakkay Pass your helmet off as a jaunty cap with Yakkay's adorable helmet-hats. Once you buy the standard noggin-protector ($175) you can completely reinvent your look by popping on one of five interchangeable covers ($65).

Nutcase While we'll probably steer clear of this Portland-based company's kookiest helmets, we love their playful-yet-adult options, like the Union Jack ($60) and eight-ball ($50) designs.

Human Tarot Project Bike-riding goes fortune-teller when you wear one of Danielle Baskin's hand-painted helmets (based on a set of early-20th-century tarot cards). Adeline Adeline offers three "telling" versions ($250), but you can contact the artist directly to choose from 75 other designs.
