If you're spending $2,000 on a trench coat, it had better be one you love. Burberry takes this request seriously, as evidenced by its just-launched online bespoke service that lets you customize and purchase the jacket of your dreams.
Upon entering the site, you begin with a classic camel Kensington but can opt for lengths and styles ranging from short and zippered to long and shearling. You're next cued to select a color and a fabric and then choose from a handful of sleeve add-ons like leather epaulets, bridle cuff straps and bronze studs. (We know it sounds weird, but check out how cool studs look on Emma Watson's recent creation.) Finish up with lining, buttons, belts and collars--say, natural finn raccoon--and add a monogram at no extra cost.
As you play around on the site, you can watch your price tag ebb and flow. And while it's easy to rack up an $8,000 bill, we created a lovely jacket for about $2,800 (comparable to many off-the-rack offerings).
The site claims to allow for some 12 million combinations, but Burberry does prevent what it deems as truly hideous mishmashes from bearing its name (e.g., you cannot add fuchsia lining to a pewter sateen jacket).
