One great thing about the era of the extra-smart smartphone: The cumbersome contents of your wallet are increasingly becoming digitized.
The latest step in this virtual direction is Gyft, a new app that lets you store and redeem all of your gift cards on your phone.
Let’s say you’re currently toting around a $15 Starbucks gift card, a $25 J.Crew card and $100 to Red Lobster (your aunt meant well). Upon downloading the free app, you simply upload all of the balances to your phone by typing in each card’s basic info and saving to your virtual Gyft “wallet” (the whole process took us about one minute). Then, the next time you’re at one of those retailers, open the app, click on the relevant card and proudly present at checkout.
Alternately, let’s say you’re allergic to shellfish and don’t even live within 50 miles of a Red Lobster. The app also enables you to regift cards--via email or text message--to pals who might actually use them.
A recent study estimated that $6 billion worth of gift cards go unredeemed every year--extra incentive to get yours all in one place or give away the ones you know you’ll never use.
