Forgo the Foo Dogs The hot new pair of animal tchotchkes? Birds. Make room on the mantel for these ceramic cranes alighting on an étagère. We also spotted a pewter duck terrine that would be fetching displayed on a dining room sideboard.
Here a decorator has perched a set of hand-carved marble parrot bookends beside hardcovers on a tabletop.
Swap Out the Ikat We’re tired of seeing patterns that look like they’re straight out of a central Asian yurt. So what’s a fresh take? Bold botanical prints, like leaves or vines. It’s the perfect combination of classic yet carefree.
Los Angeles-based designer Peter Dunham uses his own Fig Leaf print on this set of chairs in a room with a striped carpet and other colorful prints.
Cast Off Cool Metals While furniture made of brass and chrome has been popular for a while now, bamboo and wicker--especially in a poppy hue--are cozy alternatives to accent a space. The Lange Foundation has lots of chinoiserie bamboo pieces, which we could envision painted like this turquoise wicker chair.
Collect Storied Objects Way better than a commemorative coffee mug emblazoned “Santa Monica,” these hand-painted glasses were formerly used at everyone’s favorite celeb-spotting restaurant The Ivy. The restaurant’s co-owner, Lynn von Kersting, donated hundreds of pieces of tableware to the estate sale.
Two of our feel-good activities are decorating our home and helping shelter animals (and not necessarily in that order). This weekend we?re indulging in both at the Lange Foundation?s Annual Estate Sale. The animal rescue group has filled a sprawling former Ethan Allen showroom with everything from chinoiserie screens to Louis Vuitton luggage. Best of all: Proceeds help rescue cats, dogs and horses from select overcrowded city facilities and place them in loving homes.
We used our sneak peek of the sale, which opens Saturday and runs through the end of June, to trendspot: Last year it was all about foo dogs; this year the hot accessories are bird figurines. Here?s a look at our favorite home decor finds.
Through June at the Lange Foundation, 11419 Santa Monica Blvd.; langefoundation.com
