The Groundlings comedy club turns 40
Quick: What do Melissa McCarthy, Lisa Kudrow and Kristen Wiig have in common?
True, they’re each hilarious comic actors. But it turns out these funny ladies all got their start at the legendary Los Angeles comedy club The Groundlings. (Who knew?!) And this May, the Melrose Avenue institution celebrates its 40th anniversary the best way it knows how--with a whole lot of laughs.
The must-see shows start with 40 Is the New Groundlings, a new mix of sketch comedy and improv that will run Friday and Saturday evenings all month long.
But honestly, get tickets now--they're sure to sell out--for one of the special reunion shows every Tuesday night, in which Groundlings alumni from decades past will take the stage (and surely cause the entire audience to cry-laugh).
Actual lineups are secret, but our wish list includes hearing Laraine Newman crack a few jokes on ’70s night and watching Chris Kattan and Will Ferrell reprise their head-bobbing disco dudes on ’90s night. There’s an open bar after the show, adding to the festive atmosphere.
And here’s a tip: Wear waterproof mascara to be Instagram-ready after all the cracking up.
