Topanga Candle turns heirlooms into fragrant candles
Filled with wax, an antique tea tin becomes a travel candle.

We?d wager that we?ve smelled more candles than there are grains of sand on Santa Monica Beach. And typically, they're no big whoop.

That was, until we happened upon a small studio turning out something truly unique: candle antiques. The Topanga Candle Company fills quirky collectibles with wax--a vintage tin box ($98) or a Delftware container ($98). The fun starts when you try to pair one of the antiques with the perfect recipient: like a Monkees CD box ($98) for an oldies rocker or a See?s box ($75) for a chocolate lover.

Have something lying around the house that you?ve always thought would be better with fire? For the same price as its ready-made candles (available online and at Cisco Home in Brentwood), Topanga Candle will fill your old vessel with your choice of three scents (amber fig, spicy musk or citrus floral).

If you want to take it to the next level, try one of the new two-hour candle-making classes ($58) and you will walk out with your own handmade candle. That does it: We?ll be scouring the Fairfax High Flea Market this weekend, looking for a treasure that lights our fire.
