When we think home renovation, we’re all for reusing materials (platinum LEED, of course). But at the end of the day, it’s economy, not ecology, that drives our remodeling decisions.
So imagine our surprise when we came across a cabinet company, called Semihandmade, that lets us have our cake and compost it, too. Semihandmade makes custom doors for the Ikea cabinets we already have: This means we don’t have to throw away the inside of the cabinets (the “boxes”) when we want to hit “refresh.”
At the new Semihandmade showroom in Burbank, you can order a new kitchen in walnut, bamboo or 21 other woods for up to 40 percent less than custom prices. (Oh, zebrawood, we’re wild for you.) You can even choose unfinished doors to be painted, which isn’t an option with Ikea’s standard foil veneer.
The company also customizes Ikea furniture, offering a choice of new legs. (What can’t these people do, since they turned this into this?) We’re already making a case for spending lots more time in the kitchen--after the pros at Semihandmade get their hands on it.
