The O.C.’s doughnut-a-day diet
Now cometh the fresh-fruit doughnut.
Sidecar Doughnuts & Coffee is a bakery and café that specializes in doughnuts made from organic and seasonal fruit. (Baker Brooke Des Prez has even been known to pluck ripe oranges straight from friends’ gardens.) Every hour from 6:30 a.m. till 4 p.m., she creates flavors like guava, coconut, passion fruit and Meyer lemon.
Locavores may disapprove, but we became instantly addicted to the pretty-in-purplish-pink Oregon coast huckleberry, which tastes like a blueberry with a bit more tartness.
Des Prez uses top-notch ingredients like King Arthur flour and Plugrá butter and has special treats for those with dietary restrictions (a sinfully rich gluten-free black-velvet doughnut) and chocolate addictions (a Valrhona chocolate creation with candied violets).
For now, Sidecar’s home base is a bit of a drive for Angelenos, as it’s situated in a Costa Mesa strip mall, but Des Prez and co-owners Sumter and Chi-Lin Pendergrast hint that they’re planning to bring Sidecar to Los Angeles very soon. Let the doughnut diet begin!
