West Hollywood loves its burger joints (hello, Astro Burger) almost as much as it loves its rock ?n? roll gossip. That?s why we think Irv?s Burgers is a particularly good fit in the neighborhood.
This unprepossessing little burger storefront is both new and really old.
First, the new: Owner Sonia Hong opened the place just weeks ago after relocating from a freestanding kiosk blocks away. She serves standard burger-joint fare--cheeseburgers ($4), fries ($2) and soft drinks ($2)--but all is done superbly, with fresh white-bread buns, lean ground beef and firm, crispy fries.
On every plate, Hong draws a message (?Have a nice Monday!?) or the customer?s portrait. The whole experience is a flashback to the pre-franchise good old days.
Which leads us to the old: Under one owner or another, this place has been selling burgers since 1951. Stars like Janis Joplin and Jim Morrison used to dine here, and Linda Ronstadt used a photo of it as album artwork.
Consider it the perfect spot to bring an out-of-towner looking for a bit of L.A. history.
