Now that an evening chill is setting in, we're looking for a new flame. Happily, we've found a hot one for our yard--a Modfire outdoor fireplace.
The four-foot-tall conical Modfire is a happy hybrid of the archetypal hippie chimenea and the Scandinavian-chic Malm fireplace. Phoenix-based metal artist Brandon Williams dreamed up the Modfire to complement the sleek lines of his modern home.
Not content to keep his great design in his own backyard, Williams started selling Modfires, and at his first trade show--the prestigious Los Angeles-based Dwell on Design--his work won the prize for "Best Furniture or Accessory Design."
The Modfire costs $950 to $1,250 and comes in a range of colors including white, avocado, deep red, orange and blue. For purists, there's even a natural steel version that burns wood. Painted versions come outfitted to burn propane via a tank--a plus for hillside residents wary of wood fires' tendency to throw sparks. And they're portable--at only 50 pounds, you can rearrange them as easily as you do outdoor furniture.
Safe, sexy and sleek: Modfire plus a bottle of wine is our idea of adult entertainment.
Modfire is available at Community & Co., 8259 Melrose Ave.; 323-951-9244 or modfire.com
