Into the Fold
A jewelry maker’s way with leather
Glam jewelry maker Mara Carrizo Scalise is the picture of today?s Lady of the Canyon. The jewelry designer showed visitors around her Hollywood Hills studio the other day, her elegant collarbones draped with her own designs, iridescent Tahitian pearls on leather ($495) and a golden horn amulet ($1,290).
The native Argentinean was showing off her leather goods--a return to her home country?s tradition of cowhide craftsmanship. Scalise just began making leather folders personalized with a recipient?s name and--this being Hollywood--the title of their current television show or movie. The folders (prices vary with complexity) have three-ring binders as well as inner flap pockets, so they can hold as many edits as a busy rewrite team can dish out.
Scalise also fashions clutches (from $320), including one in a to-die-for limited-edition camouflage pattern, and belts, like the wraparound polo belt ($120), in some of the softest leathers our paws have clawed.
We can?t wait to give an actor friend a folder with his name on it--especially since Scalise?s fast turnaround time pretty much ensures we can deliver it before any unforeseen network cancellation.
