We?re pet lovers--but a little wimpy when it comes to adopting a rescue animal. We?ve always wanted to take home a new friend from the pound, but the heartrending prospect of seeing so many needy animals--and knowing those we leave behind face euthanization--has kept us from taking the plunge.
Now there?s a new animal shelter that promises to keep its doggie dwellers, no matter how long it takes them to be adopted. The NKLA Pet Adoption Center has the capacity to house 59 dogs and 50 cats within its West Side location, an airy 11,000-square-foot house with a gray Cape Cod exterior, white walls and wicker furniture. Arty seven-foot-tall photos of shelter animals line the walls, and there are touchscreens that let you flip through pet pictures and descriptions, like an inter-species eHarmony.
Adoption costs between $100 and $350 depending on age and breed and includes spaying or neutering, a collar and ID tag, a bag of food, one month of pet insurance and a car carrier or dog leash. This shelter?s such a happy place, we?re bound to wind up with a four-legged family to rival Mia Farrow?s brood.
